Ferme de la Cabinette – delicious artisanal Goat Cheese in the Loire Valley

My wife grew up eating the goat cheese from this farm, and we think it’s likely one of the best goat farms in the region.

Don’t be fooled by the unassuming shop front, the farm’s customers probably stop by due to word-of-mouth.

The owner became even friendlier to us when we said that we have family living in Onzain, his town of origin.

He encouraged us to visit his barns to see the goats and their offspring. Being the city rat that I was, I was already on my way even before he finished his phrase.

I must admit, the city dweller that I was had never seen an actual goat before. I was surprised that the farm smelt a lot better than what I was imagining (yes yes, please continue rolling your eyes) .

The farm was well-maintained, unlike some horrifying YouTube videos featuring farms mistreating their livestock.

Choose from a wide selection of goat cheese aged differently – some covered with herbs and spices (perfect as starters), some for use in tartines (open sided toasted sandwiches).

One of my favourite recipes is to spread apple compote onto slices of bread, add a slice of goat cheese, followed by some honey.

Bake the tartine until parts of the cheese’s surface become golden brown, and enjoy it with a vinaigrette salad.

Bon appétit!
