There are so many amazing boulangeries (bakeries) in Paris, but “The French Bastards” definitely stands out with its cheeky name.
Unlike other parisian establishments which display proudly their long history (est. 1890 or Maison founded after the meteorite landed on the dinosaurs etc), you’ll see printed prominently on their shop front:
“Maison fondée hier” (Maison founded YESTERDAY).
Love the tongue-in-cheek and how they embrace being a contemporary bakery!
It all started from a love affair… with food
One upon a time, there were three food-obsessed childhood friends – Julien Abourmad, David Abehsera and Emmanuel Gunther.
Julien was a chief pastry chef working for a chef in Australia and was affectionately called “the French bastard” due to his baking skills.
The former convinced his two business school friends to challenge the conservative parisian bakery scene by mixing traditional and original flavours, naming the bakery after his surnom (nickname).
Their bakery prides itself on its line of rustic breads and pastries created with organic flours, long fermentation time, and natural yeast.
Don’t be surprised to find unexpected yet delicious additions like orange peel, hazelnut, corn and black beans in their pastries and bread!
kayafrenchtoast’s picks
They have the most delicious pain de compagne (country-style sourbread), sandwiches, cinnamon bakba, and perfectly salted chocolate chip cookies, but what keeps us coming back again and again (at least 30 times since we last counted!) is…
… their dark chocolate éclairs. ?
With chocolate shavings sprinkled all over, the éclairs are not cloyingly sweet, and filled with a dark, almost bitter chocolate cream.
Fans of very sweet milk and white chocolate, please stay away!
