The Loire Valley, also known as the valley of a thousand chateaus, is surprisingly not so well visited by tourists outside of Europe (yet).

We still encounter many friends who are surprised to know that famous wines like Vouvray, Sancerre, Chinon and Touraine-Mesland actually come from this beautiful region.

As you travel from one vineyard to another for your wine tastings, don’t forget to make time for charming towns along the picturesque river like Tours, Amboise, Blois, Chinon, Cangey… we’ll need to dedicate a whole series of blog articles just to cover the above!

Take a drive along the Loire River, the longest river in France, and you’ll quickly understand why the region’s climate is perfect for vineyards. It’s a lovely mix of sun, gentle winds and occasional showers.
When we visit our family who lives near the Chaumont-sur-Loire Chateau, also renowned for its annual intentional gardens festival (Festival Internationale des Jardins), we always make an effort to drive around 15 mins to this little artisan famous for its duck-related products.

It’s really located in the middle of nowhere, but we assure you that it’s well worth the drive.
Their foie gras, confit de canard (the succulent and tender thigh/drum stick cooked for hours in the duck’s own fat), and magret de canard fumé (smoked breast meat from specifically the foie gras duck) will be far superior to those that you eat in many restaurants.

For visitors who need the produce to travel long distances, the seasoned and conserved canned versions of the foie gras would be an ideal choice as they have a much longer shelf life.

However, if you have an ice pack with you, do consider trying the semi-conserved foie gras. It’s dégusté with toasted breads, sweet onion or fig jam, and paired with a vin doux (sweet wine), recommended by the artisans themselves.
These are supposed to be festive dishes reserved for special occasions like Christmas, but we can’t help indulging in some everytime we are in town!

Ah! Un petit Sancerre, ou un Gamay…
Chaumont? Joli coin, nous y sommes passés il ya qqs temps.
Stay safe.
Oui, c’est vraiment une jolie région avec plus de charme et de bons produits artisanaux ! Keep safe too !
