As you can tell by now, we are frequent visitors to Rue Montorgueil (Montorgueil Street), a well-known pedestrian street of gourmet stalls, cafés and restaurants in Central Paris.
There are no lack of pâtisseries (pastry stores) along this street, but don’t get distracted by commercial chains like Paul, Le Pain Quotidien, Eric Kaiser…
Since you’re already here, don’t settle for anything other than Paris’ oldest pattiserie, founded in 1730 by King Louis XV’s pastry chef, Nicolas Stohrer.
The establishment is classified a historical site today, and its sumptuous decor was also designed by the same decorator of Opera Garnier.
kayafrenchtoast’s picks
We’re not the biggest fans of their bread and baguettes as our humble opinion is that there are better alternatives in Paris.
However, their pâte feuilletée (puff pastry) is one of the flakiest, buttery yet lightest we’ve tasted in the French capital.
In other words, if you are overwhelmed by the food choices at Stohrer’s, your starting point should be based on food products dependent on the exceptional quality of their puff pastry.
Don’t miss their deceptively light butter croissants for a lovely French breakfast.
However, if you are up for something even more local and a little less common for tourists try their bouchée à la reine ! It’s likely one of the best we’ve tasted for a long time.
Last but not least, also try one of France’s traditional desserts baba au rhum (a sponge cake imbibed with rhum), invented by the founding pastry chef Nicolas Stohrer himself!
