During our last trip to Iceland, there was no lack of waterfalls in the land of water, ice and fire.
However, we couldn’t forget Svartifoss, the black waterfall, aptly named due to its dark columns formed from cooled lava thousands of years ago.
Like many lava formations across the world, the waterfall’s columns have a curious hexagonal base. According to scientists, this shape provides the fastest cooling process for the molten rock.
Svartifoss’s basalt columns also inspired the architects of many other Icelandic buildings.
An example is the HallgrÃmskirkja Church in the Icelandic capital ReykjavÃk which we also visited during our trip!
