Used since prehistoric times, Ochre is a natural clay pigment with colours ranging from yellow to deep orange or brown.
The brillant hues of this natural ingredient have also contributed to the characteristic colour palette of provençal art and architecture.
Located in the heart of one of the largest ochre deposits in the south of France, Roussillon is a charming little village painted with the flamboyant strokes of the pigment.
During our last vacation, we also visited the famous orche trails that bring you through a hilly landscape shaped by centuries of orche mining.
Nature has gradually reclaimed the site, and you’ll find a delightful mix of greenery and orange tones scattered throughout the path.
As the ochre rich soil has a composition closer to sand compared to the rest of the provençal countryside, don’t be surprised to find plant varieties there which are typically found at seaside locations!
